The Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) is designed for experienced practitioners in business, industry, and the professions seeking to engage in a part-time research-orientated programme of postgraduate study. The DBA is regarded as having the same status as the more commonly known PhD and permits candidates to use the title of ‘Dr.’ upon satisfactory completion.

As a professional doctorate, the DBA consists of two stages: Stage 1 is a taught programme taken on a part-time basis over a two-year period, followed by Stage 2, a research programme aimed to be completed in a further two-year period of study, with a maximum period of study of seven years. Students can choose to attend live classes at the UCLan Preston campus for two weeks per year or complete them online.

Stage 1: Taught Component
Stage 1 consists of four taught modules taken over the first two years. These modules provide the building blocks for your thesis.

Critical Issues in Business and Management Research (40 credits)
Research Methods (20 credits)
Locating Doctoral Research in Theory and Practice (40 credits)
The Reflexive Practitioner (20 credits)

Stage 2: Research Component
Stage 2 consists of primary research, based on preceding work, over three years. Candidates will produce a 60,000-word thesis under supervision, which is examined in a viva voce.

DBA Thesis  (420 credits)

Module Aim: To develop the student’s ability to design and conduct an investigation into a live business, management, or professional issue, making a significant contribution to both appropriate theory and professional knowledge and practice.

  • Applicants must hold an approved Masters degree in business, management, or in a relevant subject.
  • Applicants should demonstrate a significant level of relevant business, management, or professional experience at an appropriate level.
